Jonas Mekas’ cinematic document of the Living Theatre’s anti-war performance became his most overtly political film. “The Brig” (1964) won the Grand Prize for best documentary at the Venice Film Festival later that year.

100th Anniversary of the Birth of Jonas Mekas at the Cinematheque Seoul Art Cinema

During the festival period, director and experimental film specialist Pip Chodorov, Sebastian Mekas son of Jonas Mekas, and director Julius Ziz, who also contributes to the organization of the centennial program “Jonas Mekas 100!”, will visit the festival and share stories about Jonas Mekas’ films. In addition, film critic Youngbin Kwak and critic Yunseong Yoo prepared an in-depth lecture on the questions about Jonas Mekas’ films. In memory of Jonas Mekas, 7 of his films will be shown at the festival.

Screening of “Back from New York” at the Documentary Film Festival DocsValència

From bohemian life in New York with their master Jonas Mekas, back to rural Lithuania. Documentary film “Back From New York” by Ramunė Rakauskaitė tells a story of two artists, who flee to New York where they met with their guru Jonas Mekas, the creator of avant-garde filmmaking.

Two screenings of this film is foreseen in the programme of DocsValència:
– On 7th May, 20:00h the screening will be introduced by Arūnas Matelis, the producer of film.

“Happy Birthday, Jonas Mekas!”. Screening of “The Brig” at Sprengel Museum Hannover

On the occasion of Jonas Mekas’ 100th birthday, the Sprengel Museum Hannover honors the artist by presenting his films in an exhibition space during the year.

From 17 June to 31 July the visitors of  museum will have an opportunity to watch the film by Jonas Mekas “The Brig” (1964). Film starts at 10:30 / 12:00 / 13:30 / 15:00 / 16:30 / 18:00.

From 5 August to 11 September the film “Lost, Lost, Lost” (1976) will be on display.

“Happy Birthday, Jonas Mekas!”. Screening of “Guns of the Trees” at Sprengel Museum Hannover

On the occasion of Jonas Mekas’ 100th birthday, the Sprengel Museum Hannover honors the artist by presenting his films in an exhibition space during the year.

From 15 April to 12 June the visitors of museum will have an opportunity to watch the film by Jonas Mekas and Adolfas Mekas “Guns of the Trees” (1961). Film starts at 10:30 / 12:00 / 13:30 / 15:00 / 16:30 / 18:00.

From 17 June to 31 July the film “The Brig” (1964) and from 5 August to 11 September the film “Lost, Lost, Lost” (1976) will be on display at Sprengel Museum Hannover.

Three programs that will consist of one of Jonas Mekas’ feature films that speaks to his mission of personal cinema. He believed that everyone could and should create a film. Each title will be paired with a different filmmaker whose radical or visionary work Jonas invited into the FMC collection in order to ensure the visibility that he believed these masterpieces of cinema deserve.
