Videodrome 2 is an alternative cinema broadcasting and programming project that takes place in a 49-seat handmade screening room in Marseille.

This year marks Jonas Mekas’s centenary and also Nam June Paik’s 90th anniversary. In commemoration, Nam June Paik Art Center organizes the 14th edition of its symposium series Gift of Nam June Paik, in collaboration with Lithuanian Culture Institute and Dong-Eui Univ’s Cinema & Transmedia Institute. Centered around Fluxus movements from the late 1960s in New York, Paik and Mekas, truly avant-garde artists of the time, were one of the closest friends to each other. In 1968, they performed a political Fluxus performance in which the UN Charter was read in Korean and Lithuanian respectively, and Nam June Paik performed a series of performances such as <Fluxus Sonata> in Mekas’ Anthology Film Archive.
The symposium is open only to those who have registered in advance. Pre-registration will be accepted through the Nam June Paik Art Center website from July 8 (Fri).

Two films by Jonas Mekas will be screened at the film club of Les Monteurs associés on July 5 in Nouvel Odéon Cinéma. We will have the pleasure of welcoming Pip Chodorov, who will talk about Jonas Mekas’ films Outtakes from the Life of a Happy Man (2012, 68 mins) and Imperfect Three-Image Films (1995, 6 mins).
In these films, Jonas Mekas, the figure of experimental cinema and creator of the Anthology Film Archives in New York, tells us that his images are more real than his personal memories which are already erased or are in the process of being erased. Images that exist only for themselves, even by themselves and that represent life itself. No actual story. No dramaturgy. But there is indeed an act of editing, a general organization, durations, motives… which we will examine in the presence of Pip Chodorov, friend and distributor of Jonas Mekas’ films.

The Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema (Pesaro Film Festival) is one of the most important Italian film festivals. Since the very beginning, the main goal was to organise a non-competitive festival mainly focusing on first works and aiming in particular to walk through new ways and choices that are able to start processes of growth, improvement and evolution of cinema in the world.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jonas Mekas, the father of the new American cinema, there will be a roundtable discussion with art director and curator Laura Gabrielaitytė-Kazulėnienė, and the critics Adriano Aprà and Rinaldo Censi.

Special screening of “Outtakes From The Life Of A Happy Man” by Jonas Mekas is a record of the fleeting moments of the great artist, who received the Dragon of Dragons in Krakow in 2010 and would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. The screening will conclude with a unique meeting as part of the new Kraków Film Festival Talks series. Marcin Borchardt, an outstanding director and documentary filmmaker, and Professor Bogdan de Barbaro, a renowned psychiatrist and therapist, will talk about happiness.

Jonas Mekas’ Centennial program is complemented by a discussion with Patrice Rollet, moderated by Bernard Benoliel. Discussion will give an opportunity for the cinema-going public to go deep into the works of one of the greatest literary and visual poets in the contemporary film history. Patrice Rollet is essayist, a philosopher by training and film critic. Bernard Benoliel is director of cultural and educational action at the Cinémathèque française.

Jonas Mekas’ Centennial program is complemented by a round table with Pip Chodorov, Émeric de Lastens and Cécile Tourneur, moderated by Caroline Maleville. Pip Chodorov is a director, specialist in experimental cinema and video editor (Re: Voir). Émeric de Lastens is a critic, programmer and film historian and film adviser at the DRAC Île-de-France since 2018. Cécile Tourneur has a doctorate in the history and aesthetics of cinema.
